The plant-based food industry is always changing with the help of technology. That’s how companies perfect new options for consumers with a plant-based lifestyle. With the popularity of plant-based foods on the rise, it looks like we could see a new wave of ways in how food is prepared and an international company based in Spain could the one to thank.
Barcelona-based company Novameat changed the game. The food tech startup responsible for creating meat Alternative to steak and pork but with a twist. According to Now What News, the company created a meat substitute through 3D printing in 2018. Novameat has developed a 3D printed synthetic meat that is 100% plant-based and mimics the textures of real beef and chicken. .
As with anything, research takes time and must be precise before a concept is released into the world. Novameat CEO and researcher Giuseppe Scionti honed over ten years to bring his company to fruition. Using his skills and knowledge as an expert in the fields of biomedicine and tissue engineering, he has been studying biosynthetic tissues for some time. Some of his work includes artificial corneas and skin for artificial ears.
In an interview with Business InsiderGiuseppe describes how challenging it is to create the texture of meat. “Precise texture is the hardest element to perfect for synthetic meats. It has a fibrous texture,” he says.
It would make sense for Giuseppe to move his research and invest in the plant-based industry because it is so lucrative. Allied’s market research shows that the vegan food market size was valued at $14.2 billion in 2018 and by 2024 is expected to reach $31.4 billion. Currently, his company is valued at $20.7 billion and is estimated to grow to $23.2 billion in the next three years.
Roommates, if you want to try Novameat, you’ll have to be patient. These meats are currently inaccessible to the general public, but it will be available next year. A report from Reuters says consumers can expect to buy Novameats in restaurants and supermarkets by 2022.
