Banjo-Kazooie has a potentially bright future
Banjo-Kazooie will join its brothers in the platform thanks to a new Microsoft deal, and considering the recent revivals, a new Banjo is entirely possible.
Banjo-Kazooie is part of Rare’s golden age, and is a beloved classic for most of those who grew up with the Nintendo 64. Despite its enduring reputation as a nostalgic treat, it has aged well. amazingly, the series it spawned has been dormant for 15 years. This was mainly due to Microsoft’s acquisition of Rare and was criticized as Banjo universe with Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and bolts. Despite pleas from fans, Microsoft didn’t do anything more with bears and birds until 2019 when they debuted as the DLC characters in Super Smash Bros..
Now that they’ve returned to the public consciousness, Banjo and Kazooie’s debut game is also available on the Nintendo platform through the Nintendo 64 branch of the Switch’s online services. This is a bright spot for the series and it could hint at something bigger. Microsoft’s purchase of Activision-Blizzard will make the company own franchises similar to Banjo-Kazooie, this can be used as an excuse to green light a Banjo game.
Nintendo Series makes a comeback
The rise of the Internet led to requests from Nintendo fans for the company to focus on series that weren’t the big moneymakers like Super Mario, Pokemon, and The Legend of Zelda. When it comes to lesser-known properties, Nintendo is usually quiet. However, sometimes it gives a chance for a smaller sequence, even if the result is not as good as with Star Fox Zero. Other times, the new game ends like Kid Icarus: Uprising or Metroid Dread, a refreshing take on a classic series that pleases older fans and brings new fans into the mix with its contemporary identity.
Although never the property of the first party, Banjo-Kazooie fit this model. In certain demographics, one could argue it’s more popular than some of the series that Nintendo has brought back like Star fox, fox and Kid Icarus. Enough Banjo Fans will be pleased to see a proper return to the old format, with the same aesthetic but modern paint job. With Super Smash Bros. Ultimate provide a sample for faithful, contemporary, and first-of-its-kind character designs Banjo The game is again available on the Nintendo system, which opens the door for a proper revival.
Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard Acquisition
Microsoft’s purchase of Rare in the early 2000s was not a perfect move for the company’s image. The delightfully colorful collectibles for which Rare is known have fallen to the curb as a mainstream genre, and the spawned Rare series has become a remnant of gaming culture at the turn of the millennium. With Microsoft gets even more franchises by buying Activision Blizzard, things can look bleak for those familiar with Rare’s fate in the sixth generation of consoles.
That being said, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon is one of the suites to which Microsoft will own the rights. Similar to Banjo, both Accident and Spyro are 3D projection discs from the 1990s and a source of nostalgia for many. Although their series was left behind in the late 2000s, both have returned with huge remakes.
While no future is guaranteed right now, the early presence of this series in Microsoft’s product line could inspire a shift in priorities. They could lead Microsoft to give bears and birds another chance. A remake of Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie, or an entirely new platform, is possible. No matter what happens, fans can hope Banjo-Kazooieof the future.
