Babylon’s Fall Closed Beta Impressions – Four is a Crowd

The idea of Platinum Games making some kind of live-serve game confused me a bit. Such a game isn’t as far away from a developer’s treasure as I could imagine, but The Fall of Babylon just got its phase 3 closed beta. I had to spend some time with it and, while the enemies were too dense for my liking, I had a good time. To me, the battle is like Platinum, and I’m really looking forward to getting back into the game when it’s fully released. I might even try and get some other people to join me.

If you haven’t followed it yet, The Fall of Babylon is a third-person action game that revolves around going into dungeons with a group and destroying hell from a number of imaginary enemies. At the start of the beta, I was forced to create a character from one of three classes. Gender, face, hairstyle, all the usual stuff is here. For whatever reason, choosing a hairstyle doesn’t really adjust it for the character creator, so I’m not sure how it will look on the character model when I’m in the game. Likewise, the classes are all hooded, so I can’t make out the face I’m choosing either.

Players use two main forms of attack. In a unique twist, you’ll equip four weapons at once. Two of these you use physically, the other two are used mentally, which is mana called in The Fall of Babylon. By default, my character is equipped with four swords. The beta features six levels in an available area, and all focus on navigating linear dungeon corridors while battling enemies. Finally, a stronger enemy awaits. Once you kick them to the curb, you’ll be dragged back to the center of the game.

Approach time

I know people felt that the battle wasn’t quite up to par in the final beta, but I think it’s great this time. In addition to your four attacks, you can also dodge, which uses a lot of sanity. Since this is the Platinum we’re talking about, you can do a perfect dodge if you dodge at the right time. Since there are four weapons equipped at once, there’s plenty of room for both experimentation and variety. I once came with two different types of bows, a shield and a large hammer, creating a completely different combat experience.

As I mentioned, I think the enemy is too spongy. Personally, I prefer fights with enemies that don’t take too long to chew through. You just hit them and hit them and hit them, and it can feel like it takes forever. As you go through the levels you will find pickups that can be exchanged for gear at the end of the level and have a lot of equipment. I like this, as it encourages trying out different weapons to maintain your DPS.

Overall, I think the beta is closed for The Fall of Babylon is quite promising. The frame seemed stable and I even had to fight alongside some randos, one of which basically abandoned me in a fight. I will never forgive him. I’m definitely not a fan of live service games, but I’ll dig into this one when the time comes. Anyway, I love Platinum Games and they deserve a chance.
