Awkwafina says she’s leaving Twitter after dealing with complaints about black appropriation and use of black tone
Awkwafina called Twitter an “ingrown toenail” and announced her departure from the social media platform.
Rising Asian-American comedian and film actress Awkwafina recently took to her Twitter page to address allegations of appropriation of Black culture and dialects, and told fans she was leaving the platform.

However, during her growing stardom, many began to question whether the 33-year-old actress was guilty of appropriating Black culture with her caricature performance style. or not.
Last August, in an interview promoting the latest product Marvel release, Awkwafina received backlash after stating her stance on writing with an Asian accent and was quoted as saying:
“I refuse to do accents. I disagree with someone writing an Asian experience for an Asian character. I made it very clear, I never went to auditions that I felt like I was turning into a fake of who we are. “
Social media was quick to remind Crazy Rich Asians star of her rap career, and pointed out that she is not afraid to take the style of Black culture and use it to gain a career, but feels strongly opposed to using her own culture yourself in the same way.
After years of failing in this regard, Awkwafina issued a full apology for the blacked out statements and offered an explanation as to why she used AAVE, stating:
“My immigration background allows me to portray the identity of the movies and TV shows I have watched, the children I attended public school with, and my undying love and respect for for hip hop.”
