He told the court he wanted to “shoo them away” after an altercation in Liverpool city center on the evening of November 25 last year.

Ava White, 12, was stabbed to death in Liverpool city center.

He admitted to possessing the knife, which the court heard had a three-inch blade, but denied her murder and manslaughter.

More than 20 members of Ava’s family were in the gallery and there was cheering when the foreman said the boy had been convicted of murder.

The teenager, seen via video link throughout the process, put his head in his hands.

The boy told the jury he didn’t want to hit Ava

During the trial, which lasted just over two weeks, the court heard that Ava and her friends were involved in an argument with the defendant and three of his friends after the boys recorded Snapchat videos of the group.

The defendant told the jury, “I promise I didn’t mean to hit her.”

He said that earlier in the evening he overheard one of Ava’s group threatening to stab his friend if he didn’t delete a video of Ava.

The court heard that after Ava was hit in the neck, the defendant ran away, throwing away his knife and removing his coat, which was later found in a garbage can.

CCTV showed him and his friends at a store where the accused took a selfie and the group bought butter, which he said was for crumpets.

He then went to a friend’s house and when his mother contacted him because the police wanted to speak to him, he told her he was playing a computer game.

After being arrested just after 10.30pm, he initially told police he had not been in the city center but in later interviews blamed another boy for the stabbing.

Teen faces life imprisonment

The jury was out for two hours and eight minutes before announcing the verdict.

Ms Justice Yip told the defendant: “In light of the jury’s verdict, you know the only sentence I can give is life imprisonment, but I have to decide what is the shortest time you need to be imprisoned.”

She adjourned the case for sentencing on July 11.

Outside of court, Detective Superintendent Sue Coombs said Ava’s family is still “completely devastated.”

She said: “Today a 14-year-old boy was convicted of her murder but the conclusion of this trial in no way ends her grief and suffering.

“Ava’s death has horrifically illustrated the devastation that can be caused by carrying and using knives and Merseyside Police will continue to work to combat knife crime.”

Liverpool Mayor Joanne Anderson said: “Our thoughts are with Ava White’s family and friends on this extremely difficult day.

“The pain and suffering they have gone through over the past few months is unimaginable.

“We can only hope that the verdict will bring them some comfort.” Ava White: Boy, 14, found guilty of murdering 12-year-old
