Within hours, his successor, Alexander Schallenberg, also offered to resign. Schallenberg served as foreign minister under Kurz and in October he was sworn in to defend the coalition government. Critics of Kurz’s conservative ÖVP party argue that he is still pulling strings behind the scenes. The party is expected to choose a new leader, who could also serve as prime minister.
