British commentator Katie Hopkins has been expelled from Australia after bragging about breaking hotel quarantine restrictions.
Hopkins, who frequently caused outrage for his racist remarks, traveled to Australia to star in the reality TV show Australia’s eldest brother. In a since-deleted video on Instagram, she describes answering the door naked and not wearing a mask to hotel staff delivering meals to her room.
Her comment caused outrage.
To avoid the spread of Covid-19, international visitors to Australia are forced to stay in isolation at a hotel. People who have been quarantined are not allowed to open their hotel room doors until 30 seconds after their meals have been delivered. They must also wear a mask when the door is open.
Hopkins says she wants to “call on” Australia’s system of isolation and lockdown.
On Monday, the Australian government confirmed it had canceled her visa after the TV show fired her. According to police, she was fined AU$1,000 (US$737) for not wearing a mask and was taken to the airport to fly back to the UK.
Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews called Hopkins’ comments “appalling” and a “slap in the face” to Australians in lockdown.
“Personally, I’m glad she’s leaving,” she told ABC.
Last year, the commentator was banned on twitter for violating the platform’s policy on hateful conduct. She has called migrants “indirects” and Muslims “rulers”.
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, Australia closed its borders in March 2020, preventing many citizens from returning. This policy has prolonged family separations. However, scores of celebrities, athletes and others who were exempt were able to pass the rule.
Hopkin’s trip to Australia is of particular concern as it comes at a time when the government has cut in half the number of Australian citizens and permanent residents allowed to return home each week to 3,000.
