“I had this title even before the pandemic hit,” he said, “because I think the impossibility is at the core of opera as an art form. It tries to combine all human senses and all these arts. And you know, let’s face it, it almost never works. It often fails miserably, but that’s what’s great about it – these slightly silly, somewhat embarrassing failures open up avenues of experience that can be powerful and full of life.”
