From the developer behind the popular Guilty Gear series, the Dungeon and Fighter RPG series is being reborn as a 2.5D fighter with DNF Duel.
Phenomenon around the world Dungeon Fighter Online is being reimagined as a fighting game, thanks to the development teams at Neople, Active arc systemand Eighting. Nexon will act as publisher for Fight DNF.
Although the game was announced last December, not much is known about the game so far. Now, an impressive-looking trailer has been dropped along with new Twitter and Facebook accounts.
Dungeon Fighter Online is a hugely popular MMO with over 700 million registered users. Taking a unique approach to the MMO genre, Dungeon Fighter Online is a 2D side scrolling fighting game. It was developed by Neople and was originally released in Korea in August 2005. From there, it spread to Japan, China, Taiwan, and finally North America in 2010. PC game alone has grossed over $15 billion since its inception and is among the highest grossing IPs of all time. Outside of the game, it’s Free to play on Steam or through a standalone client, Dungeon Fighter Online created a manga and anime.
Many people will probably recognize Arc System Works for their work in the 2D combat arena. They have served as the developers and publishers behind some of the genre’s biggest series, including Guilty Gear and BlazBlue. Founded in 1988, Arc System Works has become one of the more well-known names in the combat market and has also worked on projects such as Persona Arena 4 and Dragon Ball Fighter Z.
The trailer shows off the amazing 3D animation set in the 2.5D combat style, which can be compared to Capcom works with Street Fighter 4. There are five characters introduced including Berserker, Inquisitor, Striker, Grappler and Ranger. The description of the trailer promises more fighters after the game is released. The action is flashy and intense. Although it only showed one screen, the background was colorful and full of life, like the characters were occupying it.
Arc System Works is known for create more technical fighting games. If this trend follows for Duel DNF it may not attract a wider audience. That said, initially Dungeon Fighter Online eventually developed an appeal to a mass market. So, who knows, this might just be the game to breathe life back into the stagnant fighting genre. Or, it could be a title that serves the needs of a dedicated few. Either way, what’s been less visible has been largely praised and looks great.
