Sometime during the development of the original PlayStation, Sony made the decision to switch from cassettes to optical discs. Not only has this significantly reduced the cost of producing games, but it has also dramatically increased the storage space available to developers, with each disc holding 700MB of data, which is more than 10 times the storage space on a standard N64 cart.

Despite the huge increase in storage space, some developers still needed more, resulting in numerous PS1 games being released on multiple discs. There have been more than 50 such titles in North America alone, each of which came in a special multi-disc jewel case. For collectors wanting to make sure they aren’t being duped, or for those curious about the console’s history, these are all North American PlayStation 1 games to come out on more than one disc.

Horror fans really were spoiled for choice in the ’90s, with plenty of fantastic survival horror franchises alongside just that resident Evil. sure, Resident Evil 2 is one of the many survival horror games for PS1 with multiple discs, although it’s far from the only one. Parasite Eve and Parasite Eve 2 each has four discs while fear effect and Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix boast eight between them. Kudelka is another four-disc PS1 game, although one could perhaps argue that it’s more RPG than survival horror.

When people think of PS1 multi-disc games, there are three main lines of the system final fantasy Titles are usually the first that come to mind. Another multi-disc PS1 game that emphasized stealth was Siphon filter 2although neither the game nor the series it belongs to has had as much of an impact as Hideo Kojima’s masterpiece.

Before the release of the original PlayStation, the adventure game genre had reigned supreme. However, due to some difficulties encountered in trying to port the genre’s point-and-click control scheme to a mouseless system, it slowly began to fade, with fewer and fewer releases, as the ’90s drew to a close. Still, that didn’t stop Riven: The Sequel to Myst from becoming the PS1 game with the most discs (five). juggernaut (three), Chronicles of the Sword (two) and cold blooded (two) also require more than one 700MB disc.

One of the biggest benefits of switching from cassettes to discs was the huge increase in storage space. That might not seem like a lot by today’s standards, but 700MB was a lot of storage space back then, and developers soon realized they could use that extra storage space to include full-motion video in their games. This not only led to the popularization of FMV cutscenes, and thus narrative video games, but also to a huge increase in the number of interactive movie games. These contained fox hunting and Psychic Detectiveboth of which required a total of three discs.

While SNES and N64 owners enjoyed Nintendo’s fantastic star fox Games, PS1 owners had to be content with such colony wars and G police. Neither was terrible but compared to star fox and Star fox 64, they weren’t great either. Luckily towards the end of the console’s lifecycle, players were given a few more options, with the choice being of the bunch Star Wars: Rebel Assault II – The Hidden Empire and Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedomwhich, like its predecessor, came on four game discs.

Given the range of content each has to offer, it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to learn that the three are available for the PS1 Command and Conquer Games require two discs each. That driver 2 and Gran Turismo 2 also coming on more than one disc is much less predictable, however, as is the multi-disc nature of Rival Schools: United by Fate. Like the aforementioned Command and Conquer Games comes on two discs, making it the only PS1 fighting game to require more than one disc.
