Anett Kontaveit had a dream second half of the season. She dominated the WTA tournament on indoor hardline this season and snuck into the WTA Finals with a title win in Romania. After bowing in the third round at Flushing Meadows, she won the Ostrava Open and also reached the quarterfinals at Indian Wells. She then won the Kremlin Cup in Moscow and was followed by another title win at the Transylvania Open following a back-to-back win over Simona Halep in the final.

In Mexico this week, Kontaveit scored in a row to win over Czechs Barbora Krejcikova and Karolina Pliskova before losing to Garbine Muguruza in the final match of the group stage.

As for Maria Sakkari, she is also one of the most improved players this season. Her standout performance was at Roland Garros, where she reached the semi-finals, where she lost to eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova. She then reached the semi-finals of the US Open, where she once again lost to the eventual champion Emma Raducanu. She continued with a runner-up finish at the Ostrava Open and reached the semifinals of the Kremlin Cup.

This week at WTA Finals, she won her opening match first Iga Swiatek before losing to Paula Badosa. She then took a crucial win over top seed Aryna Sabalenka to reach the semi-finals.
