An “America First” rally scheduled for Saturday in Anaheim, California, has been canceled, and city officials were thrilled with the news.

A Twitter post from the city announced the cancellation, noting that the city was a key driver in ensuring that the event featured Republican Representatives. Matt Gaetz of Florida and Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia will not take place.

“The City of Anaheim shared public safety concerns with the operator, and those concerns were shared by the operator,” the statement said.

“As a city, we respect freedom of expression but also have a duty to make statements that do not reflect the city or our values,” the statement said.

When the city is called to pick and choose the brand of freedom of speech allowed, the city asserted safety concerns, which it did not specify as the real reason.

“Help us share accurate information. We uphold freedom of speech every day in Anaheim. As a city, we enjoy the same freedom of speech and can take notice when something doesn’t align with our values. Just to be clear: concerns about public safety are the reason why this has not continued,” the city said in a statement.

Many on Twitter noted that the decision marked censorship.

Saturday’s canceled protest will be held at the Anaheim Events Center, a privately owned facility, according to reports. KNBC-TV.

The event had been scheduled at locations in two other southern California cities – Laguna Hills and Riverside – but each was pushed back, KNBC reported.

“I recognize this as a divisive issue in our community and I’m glad it’s been resolved,” said Riverside Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson, adding that she commends a site event has been cancelled.

The Laguna Hills venue, Pacific Hills Event & Party Center, is also privately owned.

However, the Riverside Convention Center, which also canceled the rally, is city-owned. That means the cancellation could face a serious legal challenge, KNBC reported.

Greene and Gaetz kept a protest event outside Riverside City Hall on Saturday.

“They may try to shut down our locations, but we will fight them in court, in the halls of Congress and, if necessary, on the streets,” Gaetz said, according to KCAL-TV.

“This is what they need to understand,” Greene said, according to KNBC-TV. “We will put America first, we will not back down.”

Lawsuits have been threatened with dismissal.
