Alleged cannibal James David Russell thought eating victim David Flaget would ‘cure his brain,’ police say

A 39-year-old Idaho man charged with 70-year-old murder in September has now been charged cannibalistic and allegedly believed that eating his victim would “cure his brain,” authorities revealed in new court filings.

James David Russell was arrested in September and charged with first-degree murder of David Flaget after authorities found the elderly man’s remains in a vehicle outside Russell’s home, with his two hands were glued together and several parts of his body were missing.

Russell had a brief stint with the police, according to Shoshone News-Press, and simply told the authorities, “It’s private property and we don’t like people without families on it,” when he surrendered.

Police allegedly seized a blood-soaked microwave, glass bowl, duffel bag and knife during their investigation of Russell’s home.

“In the face of death and carnage, it was a shock to our conscience,” Bonner County Detective Phillip Stella said Thursday, adding that Russell’s cannibalism allegation has Possibly the first in the state of Idaho.

“It’s not the bloodiest crime scene, but it’s more of a, ‘What the hell is going on here?’ and ‘Why am I picking up pieces?’ Stella said.

According to authorities and court documents, Russell believes he will be able to “heal himself by excising portions of the flesh”.

An autopsy, completed on September 13, three days after the alleged murder, confirmed that tissues found in Russell’s home belonged to Flaget. Some of the 70-year-old’s remains have yet to be found.

Stella said: “Flaget has had a number of conflicts like the one with Russell and told the family about them. “The family already has enough warning signs that Brother Russell is a danger to himself or others.”

Russell is scheduled to have a review hearing on December 28. Alleged cannibal James David Russell thought eating victim David Flaget would ‘cure his brain,’ police say
