The filmmakers behind one of the best films of the year, everything everywhere at once have signed an exclusive long-term contract with Universal The Hollywood Reporter. Directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, who form the filmmaking duo Daniels, and their longtime producer Jonathan Wong have reportedly signed a five-year partnership with the studio.
While Kwan and Scheinert are best known for their indie films, the duo began directing visually stunning music videos, including the viral video for DJ Snake and Lil Jon’s “Turn Down for What.” She made her feature film debut in 2016 with the absurd black comedy Swiss Amy Manin which actor Paul Dano plays a man stranded on a desert island who befriends a bloated corpse, played by Daniel Radcliffe.
More recently they directed the hit sci-fi action film starring Michelle Yeoh, Everything everywhere at once, which received universal acclaim and just passed the $100 million mark. Both films were co-released by indie studio A24 Everything everywhere at once This made it the company’s highest-grossing film to date. Going forward, the duo will direct and execute the half-hour comedy mason with comedian Nathan Min for A24 and Showtime.
“Daniels are creators who have honed their craft with a distinct vision and a unique voice that is distinctive across the spectrum of content vying for viewers’ attention,” said Donna Langley, chair of Universal Film Group. “Their films are remarkably theatrical, and with only two original projects, they’ve only scratched the surface of what they’re capable of as filmmakers. We’re grateful they chose to embark on their journey with us.” In response to the news, the Daniels said, “We’re flattered, grateful and a little overwhelmed. Thanks to Donna, Jimmy, Peter, Michael and their entire Universal team for believing in us and our weird movies. To all the fans, thank you for making our career possible, we will try not to let you down.”
Universal previously signed filmmaker Jordan Peele to an exclusive five-year deal in 2019 after working with the director on his Oscar-winning feature debut. Go outand its continuation Us. peele’s latest movie nope, is the director’s first film under this new deal, which has currently grossed $80 million at the domestic box office. Given how unique and ambitious Peele’s latest film is, Daniels should feel right at home producing films for Universal. Hopefully the duo will find as much, if not more, creative freedom as they did with A24.
Everything everywhere at once is for now available on digital streaming platforms as well as on Blu-ray and DVD.
