Albuquerque police search for vehicle suspected of killing 4 Muslim men – National

Authorities investigating whether the killings of four Muslim men are linked said Sunday they need help locating a vehicle believed to be linked to the deaths in New Mexico’s largest city.

Albuquerque Police said they released photos of the vehicle suspected of being used in the four murders in hopes people could help identify the car. Police said the vehicle they were looking for was a dark gray or silver four-door Volkswagen with tinted windows and appears to be a Jetta.

Police did not say where the pictures were taken or what led them to suspect the car was involved in any of the crimes.

“We have a very, very strong connection,” Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller said Sunday. “We have an interesting vehicle. We need to find this vehicle.”

Police are still trying to determine if there are any links between the murders. A Muslim man was killed in Albuquerque Friday night and three Muslim men have been killed in ambush gunfire in the past nine months.

Police said Saturday the victim of the latest killing was a South Asian Muslim believed to be in his mid-20s.

The man, whose identity has not yet been confirmed by investigators, was found dead after police received an exchange of gunfire.

Earlier this week, police confirmed that local detectives and federal law enforcement officials were looking into possible links between each crime.

Two of the men – Muhammed Afzaal Hussain, 27, and Aftab Hussein, 41 – were killed in the past week and both were from Pakistan and were members of the same mosque. The third case concerns the killing in November of Mohammad Ahmadi, 62, a Muslim man of South Asian descent.

People spread dirt over the grave of Muhammad Afzaal Hussain, 27, at Fairview Memorial Park in Albuquerque, NM on Friday, August 5, 2022. A memorial service was held for Aftab Hussein, 41, and Muhammad Afzaal Hussain, 27, at the Islamic Center of New Mexico on Friday. Both Muslim men were shot dead near their homes just six days apart. Law enforcement believe a suspect could be responsible for the killing of three Muslim men over the past nine months.

Police declined to say whether Friday night’s killing was carried out in a manner similar to the other deaths.

Authorities said they could not say whether the shootings constituted hate crimes until they identified a suspect and determined a motive.

“We will bring that person or those people to justice,” Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said Sunday.
