Albedo and Rhindottir are evil in Genshin & Lore impact analysis

Genshin Impact 2.3 already has a surprising part of the story in its trailer, with Albedo fighting against other characters, will he turn evil?

Genshin Impact 2.3 will add a new Main Event, Shadows Amidst Snowstorms, which continues the Albedo-focused Dragonspine Event from 1.2. Furthermore, the trailer features a scene where we can spot Traveler, Bennet, Eula and Amber fighting against Albedo.

Needless to say this contains spoilers for The Genshin effect.

Shadows Amidst Snowstorms story reveal, new lore (Updated)

During this event, we learned that there was an impostor pretending to be Albedo, and this person looked exactly like him. This impersonator is definitely the one we saw Amber, Eula, and Bennett fight against in the trailer.

Furthermore, Albedo in the new Story Quest The Snowy Past has directly confirmed Rhinedottir and Gold to be the same person. So now you might be wondering if that makes Rhindottir evil, seeing as she’s the one who created Durin and tons of nasty monsters like Rifthounds and Golden Wolflords.

Albedo reveals what everyone has guessed about Rhine and Gold

Well, you need to see The Genshin effect like an anime, a good anime. And it’s never been that simple. The characters are not “good” or “evil”. It seems like Rhine is not a “villain”, like she has tough values as an alchemist. If you are familiar with the Nasuverse, Rhine seems to be a typical mage (read our entry-level introduction to Nasuverse).

And all these monsters were the by-products of experiments she judged to be petty. That’s how I see it based on the description of the Riftborn Regalia, the Golden Wolflord’s drop:

These “gold” mass-produced deformed wolves almost coincidentally resemble scaled-down drawings on discarded paper, and the horns on the horns represent its power to orders its dark cubs to disperse the space themselves.

You also often come across cases where the bad guy initially had good intentions but then made some bad decisions. Shows that anyone can be a villain.

I expected miHoYo to do something similar with Rhine’s background. We will only know in a few months or years, let’s say someday Traveler will meet her. Maybe it’s time for us to meet Alice, too. Assuming this happens in the Teyvat Chapter, will be between now and 2025. Assuming the third part of the Albedo story is released a year from now, we might as well watch Rhine.

Our original story with our past theories is included below.

Is Albedo turning evil Genshin Impact 2.3?

First, we need to look at Albedo’s story, as told in the Character Profile that you unlock after raising his friendships.

Short story Albedo is an artificial human, created by Rhindottir. She is an alchemist from Khaenri’ah and is described as cold and strict, however, she is also a friend of AliceKlee’s mother.

Since his birth, Albedo has been taught alchemy by Rhine, and together they will explore dungeons and the Domain. One day, after finding the “Heart of Naberius”, Rhine leaves Albedo, telling him to go to Mondstadt and “Find the truth of the world”. We don’t know what “Heart of Naberius” is but we can learn more in this new Event.

Albedo later became Knight Favonius’ Chief Alchemist thanks to a letter of recommendation from Alice that Rhine left him.

Another thing we do know is that Gold, another alchemist from Khaenri’ah, created Durin and other monsters including the newly introduced Rifthounds. It’s speculative and unclear, but it seems Albedo believes that Gold is Rhinedottir. and it was because of his master’s creations that Khaenri’ah was destroyed. As hinted at the end of Event 1.2, Albedo believes he can finally destroy a nation, Mondstadt, because he is one of the Rhine’s creations. This will be a coincidence, Albedo is not a villain and wants Traveler to stop him if this happens.

Predictions and theories

One of Albedo’s goals is to try to find his owner, so it’s likely his actions in the trailer have something to do with that. Albedo is also the type who doesn’t explain his actions and lets people swim on their own. Like how he realized right away in Event 1.6 that everything was arranged by Alice, but didn’t tell the others. So he’s definitely doing this for the greater good.

miHoYo are giant otaku and they regularly make the kind of developments you’ll see in classic anime and manga since the 80’s. An arc like this where an ally character temporarily becomes Being enemies for a certain reason is typical, and doesn’t mean they’re actually evil.

Knowing miHoYo well, they’ll twist things up a bit to make this archetype more interesting, but you definitely shouldn’t expect Albedo to be truly “evil”.
