Which airbed is right for me?

Airbeds fall broadly into two categories – those that are lightweight, portable and roll up small – perfect for backpacking, for example, and larger beds require a portable pump to inflate and behave more like a traditional bed but still behave like a tent fit.

These are more like what you think of as “air mattresses” and many offer a number of technological improvements over older models to ensure they remain inflated, stiff and comfortable for the duration of their use.

What is the difference between an air bed and an air mat?

Many airbeds come in single or double sizes – and almost all can be inflated with the pumps or foot pumps that come with them.

Camping mats don’t usually need to be inflated via an external source and you can often inflate them yourself in minutes as they have pretty clever stats to ensure there is no air leakage.

They tend to be a bit more expensive but are aimed at the trekking and backpacking camping market and are well suited to this role.

Here are our suggestions for some air beds and mats that will ensure you get a good night’s sleep.

This option puts us more into the realms of serious camping adventures, but it impresses with its packability, light weight, and how its textured layer of Air Sprung Cells makes for one of the most comfortable airbed experiences of any mat we’ve tested.

It stays inflated impressively well, is easy to inflate and deflate, and also includes a self-repair kit in case the worst happens and you have a flat tyre.

A favorite among dedicated campers looking for a little luxury in their setup.

Coleman does this kind of thing well, and we were really impressed with how “bed-like” the double airbed felt – mainly because of its height and depth, but also because of its durability, the sturdy, no-nonsense material it’s made of and the lightness and Confidence with which it ensures a comfortable sleep.
