Tokyo Olympics: After Rohan Bopanna cracked down on AITA for uncertainty, the federation opened fire and said, “If you’re so good, why do you depend on the return of athletes”: The secretary general of the Indian Tennis Association (AITA), Anil Dhupar, on Monday slammed tennis star Rohan Bopanna, saying “no one should depend on the withdrawal of other players” to secure an Olympic ticket. Bopanna had reprimanded AITA for misleading the players and everyone else about their trip to the Tokyo Olympics. The tennis player said the International Tennis Federation (ITF) had never accepted entry for him and Sumit Nagal and made it clear that no change would be allowed after the promotion period unless there was any injury or illness.
“The ITF has never accepted an entry for Sumit Nagal & myself. The ITF was clear that no change would be allowed after the nomination deadline (June 22), provided injury / illness. AITA players, government, media and misled others, stating that we still have a chance (sic), ”Bopanna wrote.
The AITA Secretary General cleared the air about a trip to the Tokyo Olympics and said the federation had made every effort to give players as many opportunities as possible to participate in the Games.
“We made an extraordinary effort to ensure that the entry of our men’s couple was unfortunately not accepted by David and Rohan and were still on the waiting list, so suddenly Sumit entered for documents. We contacted Sumit to go or not to go. And when. he confirmed, we have already confirmed to the ITF that he will play, ”Dupar told ANI.
“The whole process started on June 17 and we also wrote that if Sumit is also a single player, he should have a double partner. So that’s why we changed the nomination from Rohan-Divij to Rohan and Sumit to the Tokyo Olympics. All offices were closed on Saturdays and Sundays, the ITF is closed. I don’t know why he says all this. If you’re so good, why are you dependent on people leaving? You’re a world-class player that you have to enter the Olympics on your own, why are you dependent on exit?
“I don’t understand … and where the problem is from the federation. AITA did their best to get Rohan and the players back to the Olympics so we could get a chance to play the mixed doubles as well. Entry to the Olympics is not in the hands of the federation. There are laws and regulations for this, ”Dhupar explained.
Dupar also said that AITA did not mislead anyone and that footballers who did not participate in the Olympics did so because of their ratings.
“We didn’t go astray, we tried to put them on the boat, they didn’t succeed because of their ratings. If they didn’t accept Rohan and Sumit, then the Rohan and Divid nominations still exist. We are still trying to send Sumit, what can I do if Rohan’s name is not accepted by the ITF, ”Dupar said.
In the men’s event, Nagal qualified for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics on a recall basis.
The 23-year-old is currently ranked 154th in the ATP Ranking. He won the CZE Challenger QF, №122 on August 24, 2020 after arriving in Prague. He moved to Hamburg on July 29, 2019 after winning and scored a rating point at the age of 16 on November 25, 2013.
Nagal also won the ATP Challenger Tour titles in 2017 in Bangalore and 2019 in Buenos Aires.
Earlier this month, Sania Mirzo and Ankita Raina were confirmed after the record was announced to represent India in the women’s doubles at the Olympics.
