After more than a century, a tearful return for the looted treasures of Abomey

PARIS — France this week returned 26 treasures and items of artwork, looted through the colonial period, to its former colony of Benin, marking essentially the most vital restitution of artifacts to date underneath French President Emmanuel Macron.

Their return to the West African nation on Wednesday after greater than a century was met with an emotional ceremony, as folks lined the streets, dancing and drumming, to witness their arrival on the presidential palace in Cotonou, the nation’s most populous metropolis. Some have been moved to tears.
