Ever find yourself wishing you could kill COVID-19? Well, it will be a multi-year process, one that requires years of dedicated cooperation from countries around the globe. Until then, you can play Metavaxx, an arcade-style shooter where you’ll roam around a body on a cellular level and develop a cutting-edge vaccine. It’s a weapon (and game) that really fits the present moment.
We have this and more in Cool WIP, Polygon’s Collection of eye-catching clips every week and screenshots of works in progress. Each week, Polygon employees scour the internet and flag games that catch their eye – especially those that aren’t finished. It is a sample of the most exciting projects in development at all stages of development.
Lots of projects coming up this week. We have a skateboarding game; a 3D platformer where you will dive from shadow to shadow; a peaceful survival game; and a clever puzzler. Read on to learn more about all the great games in this week’s round.
Fight disease with this shooting game
Metavaxx is an arcade style game by Punkcake Délicieux. The developers describe it as a “Minesweeper-Shooter”, where you train a vaccine. To win each level, you will need to track down and destroy all infected cells. The game is over, but we’ll include it here as it’s part of an ongoing project where the studio releases one game per month. via Patreon registration. You can also get it now through the game’s page.
A platformer runner as you dive through the dark
Dive from shadow to shadow in 3D platforms, SCHiM. A short clip program a small frog-like creature that jumps from shadow to shadow as if they were a puddle of water. The art style has simple yet sleek lines. It was created by Ewoud van der Werf and has no release date, but you can stay tuned for updates on Twitter account.
Another ice skating game? Another skateboarding game!
As long as we continue to see fun skateboarding games (and as long as people continue to get excited about skateboarding games), We will continue to write about them. This week we have Gradient. This game from Hyperparadise is billed as a “digital toy for skateboard lovers.” You can check out a gameplay clip below, but you can get the gist of it pretty quickly. It basically looks like a stripped skateboarding game. It’s just your character and a ramp. Also, the clip has some soothing rhythms if that’s your jam. The game is scheduled to release on Steam on August 3.

A peaceful survival game
Usually, survival games evoke the tension and intensity that comes with defending yourself in an unknown environment. Aquamarine, in contrast, looks quiet and peaceful. Instead of fighting the elements, this clip shows a character cultivating in a garden. Throughout the game, you’ll be able to meet creatures in a vast underwater landscape and experience its watercolor-like look. It is currently under development by Moebean and is scheduled to launch in Fall 2021.
A witch with neon vibes
This witty adventure game makes up the colors. Created by Mythic Owl, Harmony’s Odyssey looks like a 3D puzzle game where you will arrange rooms and miniature towns tile by tile. This little gif show How the neon aesthetic fits into the low-poly look. You can check out their trailer here if you want to see gameplay and the game is scheduled to launch in 2021.
