“We have a weak point for shortcomings. Those who are worn out. Because they add more spirit than perfect and loving animals, ”says Motmister.
The Belgian duo collected a big deal Instagram zerin (287K and counting) are some of the strangest and most unusual creatures in the world – mackerel figures built through taxidermy, vintage masks and Victorian costumes. They are inspired by the work of Wactor Potter, an English taxi driver who specializes in dioramas, and aim to inspire and amaze “fairy tales”.
Motmister’s new book, Mothmeister: Myths of darkness and dystopia after death, is now available from Lannoo Publishers and has seen artists travel to abandoned areas, such as the Pyramid or the disaster area around Chernobyl.
“Our museum can be anything,” Motmister says. “The Chernobyl tragedy. Fantastic figures like the Butcher from Plainfield or the famous crook Big Nose George. A velvet monkey stuffed with a bad day. Rusty prosthetic leg. Reduced original title or demo postcard. Or the artist we encounter. ”
They call themselves “manic treasure hunters” who have collected “from the shade of a pink embroidered lamp, stainless steel butcher gloves to coconut skin from the center of the garden”. Fans even send them rare items, such as a dried pig’s head with a Russian prison tattoo covering its face, with respect to someone in Canada.
And old clothes can stink a little.
“Fortunately, we shoot outside, and the smell is stronger than a swollen dead whale. But hey, they look great, ”jokes Motmister.
