An 8-year-old girl was shot and killed in Chicago Saturday while walking on the sidewalk with her mother.
Police say that she and her mother were not the intended targets, according to Chicago Tribune. The two were said to be walking together in the Little Village neighborhood when they heard gunshots and rushed into a nearby bank to take cover. There, the extent of the child’s injuries became apparent. She was taken to the nearby Stroger Hospital, but she was unable to cope with her injuries. The girl’s mother was unharmed.
Angel Ocampo was in a nearby funeral home when the shooting happened. I said ABC 7, “I just froze and just sat down. I did not know what had happened. I just sat there. It’s really not safe. There is a lot of crime here supposedly and there are a lot of shootings. This is like gang territory.”
