Four men believed to be members of a drug distribution group have been charged in actor Michael K. Williams overdose death Five months ago, authorities said Wednesday.
All four were arrested Tuesday and are being held based on criminal complaints in Manhattan federal court, including one defendant was arrested in Puerto Rico, according to a statement from U.S. Attorney Damian Williams and New York City Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell.
The three defendants are expected to appear first in Manhattan federal court to face a drug conspiracy charge that allegedly distributes fentanyl-laced heroin that resulted in the death of Williams, who was famous for his drugs. as Omar Little on “The Wire”.
The New York City medical examiner had previously ruled that Williams, 54, died of acute drug intoxication on September 6. He was found dead by family members in his penthouse. At the time, the medical examiner’s office ruled Williams’ death an accident.
The US attorney said the crimes and charges were caused by “a public health crisis.”
“And it has to stop. Deadly opiates like fentanyl and heroin don’t care who you are or what you’ve achieved. They only raised addicts and led to tragedy,” the prosecutor said.
Sewell said police detectives in Brooklyn “lived with this case, never stopping the investigation until they were able to bring a measure of justice to Michael K. Williams and his family.”
According to court papers, Williams’ death was from drugs sold by a drug trafficking syndicate that had been operating since at least August 2020 in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn.
Authorities said members of the organization sold heroin laced with fentanyl on September 5.
Court papers contained photographs, including one where defendant Irvin Cartagena could be seen performing a hand-to-hand transaction, authorities said. They added that the screenshots were taken from surveillance video.
It remains unclear who will represent Cartagena, 39, of Brooklyn, in court.
Authorities say the men continued to sell fentanyl-laced heroin in broad daylight between apartment buildings in Brooklyn and Manhattan even knowing that Williams had died from one of their products.
