25 Most Anticipated Games of 2022

2021 has been an odd year given that many developers and studios felt the impact of the pandemic the most here. What this has done, if anything, is create a 2022 video game release schedule that is absolutely unparalleled for the industry. So many highly anticipated games are said to release next year that, if even half of them are delayed out of 2022, it’s still set to be a strong year. As such, there are currently plenty of games to look forward to, especially as the first half is filling out nicely.

GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

It should be noted that the list comes with a few restraints, specifically that games must have a confirmed release window for 2022. As such, games like Final Fantasy 16 haven’t been included, as there is no certainty of their release. Finally, this list is ordered by release date and window, and then alphabetized for those with broad 2022 release windows.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus (January 28)

A stylized illustration of Hisui with different Pokemon and the Pokemon Legends: Arceus title logo featured. (From left to right, Rhydon with a Ralts sitting on its back and a Rwolet on its horn, Bidoof, Cyndaquil, Lucario, Oshawott, Pikachu, Staraptor, and Shinx. There are also two Pokemon trainers in the center of the image.)

Perhaps the first major game release of 2022 is Pokemon Legends: Arceus. Adapting a more open-world-like approach than the mainline RPGs, it is set in a time period far in the past before Sinnoh was properly recognized as Sinnoh. This leads to new explorations of evolution (such as Kleavor, a nonexistent evolution of Scyther in modern times), a new story, and a new way of battle. It’s likely to leave a major impact on the franchise, and it’s not far away now.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus releases January 28 for Nintendo Switch.

Dying Light 2 Stay Human (February 4)

dying light 2 m rating

February and March 2022 are surprisingly stacked with video game releases, and kicking off that trend is one game some never believed would see the light of day. Dying Light 2 Stay Human has been in the public eye for quite some time, as more open-world zombie games were all the rage back in the day, and it follows the first game with brand new ambitions of a breathing, living world. The dead aren’t the only enemy though, and it’ll be interesting to see how Dying Light 2 breathes new life into an old formula.

Dying Light 2 releases February 4 for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Sifu (February 8)

sifu-art

Sifu’s first appearance left an impression, there’s no doubt about that. Sifu is a beat ‘em up action-adventure game with roguelike elements. Fatal injuries also age the protagonist, adding a unique twist to the classic kung-fu story of hunting down and defeating enemies who murdered the protagonist’s family. Overall, its earned its attention thus far and it’ll be interesting to see how it holds up the stacked video game releases of early 2022.

Sifu releases February 8 for PC, PS4, and PS5.

Horizon Forbidden West (February 18)

horizon-forbidden-west-aloy-bow-2

Horizon Forbidden West will see Aloy’s journey continue as she explores the new titular location, but with everything shown thus far, it all seems dialed to 11. All sequels should build and expand on their predecessor, and this is no exception. Everything from Horizon Forbidden West‘s combat and traversal to skill trees and playstyles all seem like they’re going in the right direction. With an excellent story too, as it seems it will have, it’s one to watch next year.

Horizon Forbidden West releases February 18 on PS4 and PS5.

Elden Ring (February 25)

elden ring rings fromsoftware hidetaka miyazaki explains equippable item talismans

Sitting at the top of many personal most anticipated lists is Elden Ring, the latest Souls action RPG from esteemed developer FromSoftware. It’s the latest in a long line of difficult, punishing games like Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and so on, and yet it has its own flair and distinctions too. FromSoftware is taking the Souls formula to an open-world environment, and that alone sounds incredibly ambitious. It helps that the game director Hidetaka Miyazaki has also referred to Elden Ring as his ideal game.

Elden Ring releases February 25 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin (March 18)

A group of warriors standing together

Based on concepts from the first Final Fantasy game and working with some Soulslike elements, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin sees players take on the role of Jack, Jed, and Ash in their quest to kill Chaos. They are supposed to be Warriors of Light but doubt themselves, adding a nice twist to the classic formula. The game features an extensive Job system, with classes like the Dragoon, Monk, Thief, Knight, and various Mages (White, Black Red) appearing. Overall, it’s a unique take and one that may very well stand out among March’s other releases.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin releases March 18 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands (March 25)

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands Shows New Gameplay in Game Awards Trailer

Borderlands and Dungeons and Dragons have always had a unique relationship, with Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep often being hailed as one of the best Borderlands DLC from all the games. That very same concept is being expanded in Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands early next year, where players will take on one class as the Fatemaker (that being either the BRR-Zerker, Clawbringer, Spellshot, Stabbomancer, and apparently more to come). Combine that emphasis on DnD RPG elements with Borderlands approach to loot and guns, and it sounds like a wild ride.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands releases March 25 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Forspoken (May 24)

Forspoken-Game-PS5-Final-Fantasy-16-Unfair-Expectations-Frey

Forspoken has raised more than a few eyebrows, with its fluid traversal emphasis on gameplay and narrative-driven story in an open world. It features Frey Holland, a woman transported from NYC to this fantasy world, and she must use magical powers to journey through it, perhaps save it, and find her way home. She’s also got a sentient bracelet named Cuff, and it’ll be interesting to see how that character dynamic works. Fans should expect to learn more about it in the coming months.

Forspoken releases May 24 for PC and PS5.

Saints Row (August 23)

Saints-Row-Reboot-Characters-Delay-Volition-Deep-Silver

Saints Row is getting a reboot this year, taking the franchise back to basics in a way. Instead of taking over the galaxy, The new Boss of sorts assembles a new gang of dissatisfied members of other gangs to take over the city of Santo Ileso from Los Panteros, the Idols, and the Marshall Defense Industries. The city features nine distinct districts players can take over and can launch businesses and more. Co-op is back, players can design their own boss, and Saints Row has a unique mission progression where completing quests in the co-op world completes it in their story. Overall, while some weren’t necessarily happy with the direction, it’s worth keeping an eye on for fans of the classic Saints games.

Saints Row releases August 23 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Starfield (November 11)

starfield astronaut

It’s not all too often that a developer names a specific release date more than a year away from release, but that’s just what Bethesda did with Starfield. It’s likely because November 11 is special to the company, also being Skyrim’s anniversary, but Bethesda is confident in this date. Still, not much has been confirmed about the game but players are ready to see how Bethesda’s newest IP holds up to greats like The Elder Scrolls and Fallout. More and more information will become available over the next year, while concept art for Starfield continues to slowly build a picture.

Starfield releases November 11, 2022, for PC and Xbox Series X/S.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga (Q1/Q2 2022)

LEGO Star Wars The Skywalker Saga Rey on Ach-To

Due to the release of Rise of Skywalker (which was needed to create content) and the pandemic’s impact on the industry, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has undergone quite a few delays. Still, there’s no doubt that it’s ambitious in its own right and looks to bring the entire movie franchise together—and then some. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is currently set to release within the first half of 2022, and it could be a leading game for WB Games’ current lineup.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is scheduled to release on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in 2022.

Kirby and The Forgotten Land (Q2 2022)

Kirby waking up on the beach in Nintendo's reveal trailer for Kirby and the Forgotten Land

Just as LEGO Star Wars might lead WB Games’ efforts in early 2022, it seems Kirby and The Forgotten Land may do the same for Nintendo. Set for release in the Spring, Kirby and The Forgotten Land sees Kirby appear in a mysterious world with old structures from a long-gone civilization with 3D platforming gameplay. Moreover, though, Kirby’s iconic ability to absorb enemies and adopt their powers is said to be coming in full force here.

Kirby and The Forgotten Land releases on Nintendo Switch in 2022.

Redfall (Q3 2022)

redfall-key-art

Arkane got a lot of praise this year for Deathloop, and it’s got another title on a completely different platform for next year. Redfall is set for release on PC and Xbox Series X next year, and it’s an open-world action-adventure first-person shooter. Players take on one of four characters (cryptozoologist Devinder, telekinetic Layla, combat engineer Remi, and sharpshooter Jacob) as they slay vampires and humans in what appears to be a vampire-based Left 4 Dead-style game. Arkane has proven its reputation over and over again, and many are excited to see its take on this particular genre.

Redfall is scheduled for release on PC and Xbox Series X/S in 2022.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns (Q3/Q4 2022)

marvel_midnight_suns_cover_group

The past few years have been kind to Marvel, not just on the movie front but the video game front too. After success like Spider-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy, there’s a lot of hype for anything Marvel, and Marvel’s Midnight Suns is capitalizing on that. With gameplay similar to the XCOM series, fans will get to create their own customizable superhero known as The Hunter and play as/with Iron Man, Captain America, Wolverine, Doctor Strange, Blade, Ghost Rider, and more, and there’s little doubt that Marvel + XCOM has gotten plenty of attention.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns will release on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in 2022.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum (Q4 2022)

Gollum grinning and pulling a lever in a trailer for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum

Lord of the Rings fans have been waiting for Gollum for quite a while, but it should all prove worthwhile. Everything shown thus far hits all the right notes for showing Gollum’s personality, as well as adherence to the world of LOTR. It follows Gollum before the events of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, and fans can currently expect to be checking this out themselves by the end of 2022.

Lord of the Rings: Gollum is set for release on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in 2022.

Dead Space (Late 2022)

dead space remake

Dead Space is a beloved survival horror franchise, and so when a full remake was announced, many were stunned. Not much has been shown since the initial announcement, but everything that has been shown is trending positively. Much of the original remains, just supped up with improved assets, models, and environments. Plus, it’ll be taking advantage of the Xbox Series X and PS5 SSDs to present Dead Space as an “uninterrupted sequence shot” with no loading screens. Fans will just have to wait and learn more, but it is currently scheduled for late 2022.

Dead Space is set to release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2022.

A Plague Tale: Requiem (2022)

A Plague Tale Requiem

A sequel to A Plague Tale: Innocence—which itself had as strong of a 2021 as any year prior— A Plague Tale: Requiem takes everything from the original and dials it up even more. Amicia and Hugo’s journey isn’t over, as they travel south to new regions and cities in an attempt to control Hugo’s curse. Still, his powers haunt them but a prophesized island may hold answers for the sibling, as they once again embark on a brutal and heartrending journey.

A Plague Tale: Reqiuem is scheduled for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2022.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora (2022)

avatar-frontiers-of-pandora-creature

It should be said that Disney entrusted Ubisoft Massive with an open-world Star Wars RPG after seeing Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. That’s pretty strong praise for a game that the public hasn’t seen much of, but is expected to release in 2022. What has been shown of Frontiers of Pandora is nothing short of beautiful, though, and players –as the Na’Vi—will journey into the Western Frontier to push back the RDA forces. It is a standalone story directly unconnected from James Cameron’s Avatar, but it may very well build fans’ love of the franchise nonetheless.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is set to release on PC, PS5, Stadia, and Xbox Series X/S in 2022.

Bayonetta 3 (2022)

Bayonetta 3 wink

Bayonetta 2 was released in 2014, but many fans always hoped and believed there would be a threequel. While 8 years may have put a lot of games to rest, it’s true what they say: distance makes the heart grow fonder. The first official Bayonetta 3 trailer was shown in September 2021, confirming a release date in 2022. Not only did this build hype for its release, but it has a lot of fans speculating about the world, characters, and more.

Bayonetta 3 is scheduled for release on the Nintendo Switch in 2022.

The Callisto Protocol (2022)

The Dead Space Remake isn’t the only thing fans have to look forward to, of course. While there is the shocking fact that The Callisto Protocol is set in the PUBG universe, the former is a survival horror game from Dead Space co-creator Glen Schofield. The year is 2320, and Callisto Protocol players will find themselves in a prison colony called Black Iron, located on Jupiter’s Callisto. Oh, and there’s an alien invasion happening, as if a prison colony in the void of space wasn’t terrifying enough.

The Callisto Protocol releases on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2022.

God of War: Ragnarok (2022)

God Of War Ragnarok

God of War: Ragnarok is basically Sony and Santa Monica’s worst-kept secret. It’s the second and final game in Kratos’ Norse saga, and fans were talking about it for months before it was revealed and before it received its first trailer and info dump. Many were surprised to learn it was the end of a saga, with many expecting another trilogy, but all that means is a more story and action-packed entry. Overall, it seems like an epic journey set to answer all the questions of 2018’s God of War, and it’ll be interesting to see what comes of it and after.

God of War: Ragnarok is set for release on PS4 and PS5 in 2022.

Gotham Knights (2022)

Gotham-Knights-Key-Art-Revealed-New-Info-To-Drop-At-DC-FanDome

Next year has plenty of four-player co-op games on the horizon, and Gotham Knights is one of those. Players will need to defend Gotham City from the Court of Owls, as well as other threats, utilizing the skills of Robin, Batgirl, Red Hood, and Nightwing. Batman is supposedly gone, and that sets the theme for an even darker story. For now, fans remain in the dark, but leaks point to Gotham Knights releasing early next year.

Gotham Knights is set for release on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in 2022.

Hogwarts Legacy (2022)

hogwarts legacy sorting from behind feature

Fans have wanted a bonafide Harry Potter RPG where players are students in Hogwarts for quite some time, and for nearly as long, there has been one rumored to be in development. Trailer leaks and more made this even more concrete a while back before Hogwarts Legacy was finally confirmed to be in development. Hogwarts Legacy was eventually delayed into 2022, but for fans of the franchise who have waited for this game for so long, it’s likely well worth it. It’ll be interesting to see what comes of years of anticipation and hope.

Hogwarts Legacy is scheduled for release in 2022 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League (2022)

suicide squad kill the justice league dc the game awards gameplay

At some point next year, players will be taking on the role of Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, and/or King Shark as part of the titular Suicide Squad. Everything shown thus far about Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League is incredibly promising and enticing, as they battle various members of the Justice League who are under Brainiac’s control. This inevitably means fights with Superman (among others, such as Green Lantern, The Flash, and even potentially Batman), and if the game can nail Superman, then it might just live up to the hype.

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League is set to release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2022.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 (2022)

Patents Tease Breath of the Wild 2 Gameplay Features Like Rewinding Time

Last but certainly not least is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 or whatever its proper title ends up being called. Its latest trailer ended with 2022 appearing on the screen, and while it feels like a pipe dream, there’s a real chance players will take to the skies of Hyrule next year. If that’s the case, then Nintendo fans will really be eating good next year with Bayonetta, Kirby, Zelda, and more—something that isn’t all too surprising given how Nintendo games dominated some sales charts in 2021.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 is set for release on the Nintendo Switch in 2022.
