2021 Big Ten / ACC Challenge scores, schedule, picks: 1st Duke to face Ohio State, 2nd Purdue in the match

The Big Ten has won the Big Ten/ACC Challenge for the past two years and it kicked off its defense in earnest for triple peat running – something it hasn’t done since 2011 – on a strong note on Monday when both Iowa and Illinois won the respective battles to start the 2021 event.

Illini won more than 82-72 Notre Dame at home despite the squad’s shortfall due to multiple injuries and illnesses. Hawkeyes made by Virginia on the 75-74 line almost took a double-digit lead before scoring the lead in the final 10 seconds that put them ahead.

Tuesday’s action on the second and penultimate day of the challenge will go a long way toward categorizing which tournaments could take place this year. ACC taking precedence in four of the six games on the leaderboard could set Wednesday up as a fun finish, but no team – other than Purdue – favored by double numbers. We are looking forward to a number of competitions ending on Day Two of the annual series of events.

Here are our team’s picks as we move into Tuesday.

Big Ten / ACC Challenge game on Tuesday

Minnesota at Pitt

Time: 7 p.m. ET | Location: Petersen Events Center – Pittsburgh
TV: ESPNU | Live: fuboTV (Try free)

Featured game | Pittsburgh Panthers and Minnesota Golden Gophers

I don’t like leading the way and setting points, but I’d rather that prospect than marry Pitt. The Panthers are terrifying – they’ve taken two losses to teams outside the top 200 at KenPom – and entered Tuesday with double losses in consecutive games. Vanderbilt and UMBC. So I’m fine with Minnesota here. Prediction: Minnesota 71, Pitt 64

Indiana in Syracuse

Time: 7 p.m. ET | Location: Carrier Dome – Syracuse, New York
TV: ESPN2 | Live: fuboTV (Try free)

Featured game | Syracuse Orange and Indiana Hoosiers

Indiana’s defense under Mike Woodson has so far been a revelation for the Hoosiers. They ranked 1st in defense rate of 2-point shot and first in the nation in defense parry rate. That will be put to the test against a breach Syracuse is tracking to be the most effective in nearly a decade, but I still think IU has the goods here with Trayce Jackson-Davis play at the All-American level. Prediction: Indiana 72, Syracuse 69

Clemson in Rutgers

Time: 9 p.m. ET | Location: Jersey Mike’s Arena – Piscataway, New Jersey
TV: ESPN2 | Live: fuboTV (Try free)

Rutgers have lost three in a row after starting the season 3-0 but don’t be fooled by the losses: It’s very, very close to 6-0. Each of its three losses was due to a sole proprietorship. At home, this would be the logical place to go against a slow and tactical Clemson team – directly down to how Rutgers wants to defend. Prediction: Rutgers 65, Clemson 60

State of Florida at number 2 Purdue

Time: 7:30 p.m. ET | Location: Mackey Arena – West Lafayette, Indiana
TV: ESPN | Live: fuboTV (Try free)

Featured game | Purdue Savingermakers vs. Florida State Seminoles

Florida State took the lead in the first six games with a big loss to Florida and win in OT Boston University mix between victory and superiority Missouri and Loyola Marymount. I don’t have too much confidence that this team can handle the uncomfortable situation. The line is a bit high, though, even against a Purdue team with line to win, so I’ll take the point with the Seminoles. Prediction: Purdue 71, Florida State 62

Northwest in Wake Forest

Time: 9 p.m. ET | Location: Joel Arena – Winston-Salem, North Carolina
TV: ESPNU | Live: fuboTV (Try free)

Featured game | Wake Forest Demon Deacons vs. Northwestern Wildcats

Don’t be too biased towards this match – that’s to be avoided for me – but if you want to play it I’d put a small number on the home team and ride the Demon Deacons. Change organizational unit Alondes Williams lighting it up right now for Steve Forbes and that backcourt combination with David Williamson was a really tough draw for Boo Buie and Northwest backcourt. Northwestern was probably the better team but it was close, and the home field advantage made me lean in favor of Wake. Prediction: Wake Forest 75, Northwest 70

No. 1 Duke in Ohio State

Time: 9:30 p.m. ET | Location: Value City Arena – Columbus, Ohio
TV: ESPN | Live: fuboTV (Try free)

Featured game | Ohio State Buckeyes vs Duke Blue Devils

Duke has been one of the biggest surprises of this season – it has scored two wins over top 10 teams including a sixth win over team #1 Gonzaga – so I’m just going to take out the Blue Devil and score. Ohio State hasn’t exactly lit it so far on top of that, and while I wouldn’t be shocked if it competed to the end because EJ Liddell and Chris Holtmann’s magic, it’s hard to see they have the horses to get past this deep Duke team. Prediction: Duke 77, Ohio State 71
